Building the next generation of infrastructure

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is advancing a once-in-a-generation overhaul of the region's infrastructure with $40 billion in public-private investment at LaGuardia, Newark Liberty, JFK, and the Midtown Bus Terminal.

  • The Port Authority delivered an entirely new LaGuardia Airport, turning an outdated, once-reviled airport into a state-of-the-art gateway that was named “Best U.S. Airport” by Forbes Travel Guide in 2024.
  • The new Terminal A at Newark Liberty International Airport opened in 2023 to global acclaim, earning the title of “Best New Airport Terminal in the World” from Skytrax, a global aviation ratings firm. The agency is building on that progress with the construction of a new AirTrain Newark, and plans to expand Terminal A and build a new Terminal B as part of the EWR Vision Plan.
  • The Port Authority is leading the $19 billion transformation of John F. Kennedy Airport, including two new international terminals, the expansion and modernization of existing terminals, a simplified roadway network, and a new ground transportation center; all while keeping one of the nation’s busiest international airports fully operational.
  • The agency is also advancing a multi-phase replacement of the aging Midtown Bus Terminal, maintaining bus operations while delivering a modern transportation hub designed to better serve commuters and the surrounding community while supporting the region’s transportation needs.

Together, these historic redevelopment efforts will strengthen the region's global competitiveness, create tens of thousands of well-paying local jobs, and shape how millions of people travel for generations to come.

Bus Terminal

John F. Kennedy Redevelopment

The Port Authority is advancing a transformative $19 billion dollar public/private redevelopment program to build a new John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) with two new terminals across five previous terminal sites, expansion and modernization of existing terminals, streamlined roadways, popular local retail and dining, and stunning artwork — all to provide our customers with the world-class travel experience they deserve.

Newark Liberty International Airport

The Port Authority is in the midst of a complete redevelopment of Newark Liberty International Airport that began with the 2023 opening of Terminal A – the centerpiece of an airport-wide renaissance designed to establish the airport as a world-class gateway for the New Jersey and New York region. The airport’s redevelopment is outlined in the agency’s EWR Vision plan to accommodate future growth and deliver a world-class air travel experience from curb to gate.

Midtown Bus Terminal

The new Midtown Bus Terminal will replace the existing 74-year-old, functionally obsolete and rundown terminal with a long-overdue world-class facility.  The Port Authority has secured all the needed permits to move forward with replacing the agency’s long-outdated bus terminal and enduring eyesore in the middle of Manhattan with the world-class transportation gateway this region has long deserved. The $10 billion world-class facility will include a new 2.1 million square-foot main terminal, a separate storage and staging building and new ramps leading directly into and out of the Lincoln Tunnel.

The project plan — including the permanent closure of a portion of 41st Street between Eighth and Ninth avenues, a central main entrance, more street-facing retail, a soaring multi-story indoor atrium and new public open space — will enhance both the commuter experience at the world’s busiest bus terminal and the community surrounding the facility.

LaGuardia Airport

LaGuardia Airport has been transformed into a world-class facility offering a 21st-century passenger experience with modern amenities, state-of-the-art architecture, more spacious gate areas, and a unified terminal system. Once regarded as the worst airport in the nation, it is now considered the best, receiving prestigious accolades globally since its complete rebuild. Among these honors, it was named the 2024 Best U.S. Airport by Forbes Travel Guide, based on a survey of 5,000 global travel experts.
